DU Students, Teachers Detained During Protest against Open Book Exams. A group of around 10 protesters had gathered outside the Arts Faculty. They carried placards reading “Say No to Online Exams” and “DU Against OBE”.

Eight students and teachers protesting outside the Delhi University’s Arts Faculty against the varsity administration’s decision to conduct online open book exams were detained, police said. They were taken to Maurice Nagar police station and released after some time, they said.

The Delhi Police arrested around a dozen students and teachers from the University of Delhi for protesting and raising their voice against conducting online and Open Book examinations during the pandemic. They were released almost immediately after they were made to sign stating that they would not violate Section 144, which is in place due to the Coronavirus lockdown.

Delhi University is conducting online open-book exams for final-year students in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Students and teachers have been opposing the move citing lack of internet connectivity at many places, among other issues.

A recent survey by the Delhi University Teachers’ Association done in May had found out that 55 percent of the students of the varsity did not have access to study material to appear for an open book examination. The survey also found out that most of the students did not have gadgets to appear for examinations online. “Over 90 percent of students (of the university) had voted against online examinations. DU chooses to ignore the alternatives suggested by several departments and DUTA,” the association had said in their statement.

Delhi University has announced that the examinations for the final semester students this year will be held in an open book format, with minimal usage of internet, amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country. This measure has been taken as offline or traditional exams cannot be conducted due to the lockdown restrictions and risk of infections
