The Union Cabinet has approved to extend Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana till November today. 5 kilograms of Wheat or Rice and One kilogram of Chana will be distributed for free to each beneficiary family for five more months. This benefits 80 Crore people in the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of this scheme on the 30th of last month during his address to the nation. This helps poor and needy people during the COVID-19 crisis and also during the upcoming festival and rainy seasons. Poor people shouldn’t be hungry during the lower crisis of our economy he said.
The first phase of the scheme was announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman after the nationwide lockdown was implemented. This phase was announced for three months from April. Free food grains were provided in ration till June 30. The new five months scheme was announced on June 30 and will be extended till November 31st.
The government will distribute 200 Lakh Metric Tonnes of grain and 9 lakh 78 thousand Metric Tonnes of Chana among the National Food Security Act beneficiaries. The total expenditure for both these phases incurs 1 lakh 50 thousand crore rupees.
The Union Cabinet has approved the above scheme extension after discussion with the ministries and so Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this during his address to the nation for the welfare of the poor and needy people during this critical economic situation in India.
