Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved setting up of first central varsity in the newly created Union Territory – Ladakh Central University. Reports say that the University will have graduation in all courses including liberal arts and basic sciences. Now the HRD Ministry will make a formal proposal to set up the central university soon. The proposal will require the enactment of central legislation that will be presented before the Union Cabinet and after which will be submitted in Parliament for approval. Modi’s approval comes in the middle of rising concerns about over 10,000 Ladakhi students having to travel to distant places away from home for higher education. Ladakh got its first Univerity only in December 2019 through the enactment of legislation by the state assembly. The university has been setup as a cluster university by combining all the resources of existing colleges of Ladakh.
