NEP 2020 Institutions of Eminence to take a lead in introduction of 4 year degree course this year. New Education Policy was approved by the Union Cabinet and announced on July 29, 2020, by the HRD Minister and Praksh Javedkar.

It proposes discontinuation of M. Phil and introduction of a 4-year bachelors’ degree with research. Now 20 institutes of eminence, IoEs have been asked to lead the way to introduce this 4-year degree course. Other IoEs can follow the suit if they wish to do so in the session 2020-21.

This move to introduce the 4-year degree programmes would be implemented this year as per the information received. Also, an Academic Credit Bank which is one of its kinds would be formed by December 2020.

As per the information the draft for higher education commission of India, HECI would also be placed in the public domain to obtain feedback of the concerned stakeholders in September 2020 before it would be introduced in the Parliament.

The government is working to introduce the structural details of the common entrance tests, CET for higher education institutions entrance exams by February March 2020-21. It plans the conduct the first test in May 2021.

There were 20 higher education institutes offered the status of Institute of Eminence in August 2019. Among these institutes were IITs, Benaras Hindu University, Delhi University and 10 private colleges too.

Higher Education Secretary said:

Some of these IoEs can start these courses with immediate effect. “The phase-wise implementation of the NEP would start from this month itself. IoEs will be encouraged to start immediately in 2020-21 because 20 IoEs are selected and some of them have already signed the MoU.”

As per the secretary, the central varsities can also join by 2021 or 2022. The pilot for ACB would be tested in a few IITs and central universities before its implementation is done across the entire country.
