TN Government Renamed English Names for Various Cities. The names in Tamil Nadu have been changed to English pronunciation as in Tamil. For example, Coimbatore has now been converted to * KOYAMPUTHTHOOR * in English * COIMBATORE *District wise renamed locations are attached herewith. The Tamil Nadu government was renamed over 1,000 places across the State, so that their English names match the corresponding Tamil script.

The state government has issued a notification as per the recommendation of an experts committee for changing the names of 1,018 places, including of many important places, in accordance with how they are exactly pronounced in Tamil. Hereafter the district Collectors will take steps for changing the names of these places through the local bodies concerned. The announcement in this regard was made in December 2018. Though the G.O for the changed names was issued on April 1, the government has released it only on Wednesday.

TN Government Changed English Names for various Cities:

A high-level committee was formed on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu to ensure that the names of the towns in Tamil Nadu are in English as in the Tamil pronunciation. At this meeting it was considered to change the names in Tamil and English to completely different names. For example, the name Ambattur is the name of Ambattur in English. It was planned to convert it into English spelling. Ask the respective District Collectors to probe into this and make recommendations.

After all proposals were made, the names of the towns were changed on behalf of the government and the government issued. The internet users who saw this have been posting wrong names in it. i.e COIMBATORE, the English name of Coimbatore, which was formerly COIMBATORE, has now been changed to KOYAMPUTHTHOOR. The name AMBATTUR has been changed to AMBATHTHOOR. The government has also been released.
