UGC Increases Credits Allotted to MOOCs Notice Released. The University Grants Commissions has increased the academic credit limit for the online courses up to 40 percent from the existing 20 percent according to which the students can pick subjects relevant to their course online using the SWAYAM platform and gain the credits for the same.
The SWAYAM platform is an indigenous platform of the GOL which hosts MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) courses to enable students to virtually attend the courses taught by the best faculty; access high quality reading resources; participate in discussion forums; take tests and earn academic credits upto 20 %(which is being extended up to 40%) of the total courses offered in a prograrnme in a semester through the online courses offered on SWAYAM platform. It is aimed at benefitting lifelong learners, students, teachers, researchers to use multimedia on anytime, anywhere basis for acquiring knowledge and skills.
Keeping in mind the present situation of COVID-19, the Chairman, and University Grants Commission has constituted an Expert Committee to map the existing developed MOOCs and identify gap areas where courses need to be developed under SWAYAM as per UGC model CBCS curriculum.
In this regard, in the first phase it is proposed to develop 171 UG MOOCs courses in six subjects of Humanities and Social Science viz. History, Political Science, Commerce, Sociology, Public Admin and Anthropology and invite “Expression of Interest” from Higher Education Institutions and academicians to develop high quality MOOCs in these identified areas comparable to international standards.
The eligibility criteria for submitting proposals are: –
Applicant should be o Faculty member in a duly recognized institute/university/college holding PhD and having a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in the concerned discipline. The Faculty employed in University/College would be required to submit a consent letter of the Host University to offer MOOCs courses.
